How about multiple calendars?
Not necessarily tied to the different user groups but calendars for different purposes.
Company events calendar, birthday calendar, customer installation calendar, etc.
And set the security for each calender, only the Internal group can see the Company events calendar and the birthday calender, only customers the customer calender, und so weiter.

Wouldn't it just be easier to keep the one calendar and then show said events based on user permissions?

Yes and no.

That is how the calendar currently works. You can only see the events based on boards you have access to.
The problem comes in when someone has access to several boards but only wants to see a calendar based on one board. The calendar gets too cluttered. I may want to have access to 10 different boards but only want to see the events regarding my own department's board and maybe the public events, but not the other department's events.
