sending Mail Error

When I attempt to register a new member(for test), I have been told :

Ran into problems sending Mail. Error: 500 Command unrecognized: "AUTH LOGIN"

Senario:
1. I use smtp server.
2. I check the box "Email Random Password to New Member Upon Registration?" in Forum Preferences and Settings.
3. The mail addr. in registration is valid, but that server may be not active.

Does this error come from the register's mail server ?

Make sure you leave the password field for the SMTP stuff blank.  Your host does not support it.
