Mods and the Package Manager

Apologies if this is not in the right section, however I have some thoughts.

I've noticed that everyone keeps pushing the BoardMod stuff as the preferred method to apply mods to YaBB SE.

However, I'm just curious as to if anyone managed to think of people who don't have the luxury to just simply do that:
I spend months at a time on a government facility in the States, and their firewall is extremely restrictive - That is, I have no access to ports 22 or 23, thus I can't just go and put these mods together and in use like I would love to. However, I can easily just use the Package Manager to apply mods that do exist, but there are so few mods that are applicable in this way.
(For reference, I recently had a two-week break from the center that I refer to, so that I could finally upgrade from 1.3.0/1.3.1 to 1.4.1)

My question, then, is this:
Why are there not more mods that are applicable via package manager?

Thanks for your time,
Xial A. Lunashine

From my understanding version 1.3.1 or 1.4 somewhat broke it.  Then again there are developers who write for it, Jack Rabbit being one.  I believe we are fixing it for version 1.5 and if there is interest in it then people will write for it.

I new to YabbSE as of 1.4.1 only a few months ago.  I, too, noticed that BoardMod was being pushed even though there was the build in PackMan.  Not knowing the history behind it all I thought it strange.  I began writing my mods with PackMan in mind.  As I progressed, I realized the quarks that PackMan had and found ways to work around them.  I've never made a BoardMod mod so I don't know what quarks it has.  I have made a mod that makes some changes to PackMan to fix a few of its issues and to upgrade it a bit.  These changes are being worked into the 1.5 release.  All I can say is that it will come in time.  Feel free to make use of any of the mods I have created and am serving from my package server (see my sig)

Actually, I have been playing with the idea of making a boardmod -> YaBBpak convertor.  I mean, something to make a .yp file is easy, the question is any conversions that need to be made. (and warnings, etc.)

However, I doubt many would be interested in the program, so I haven't put much more than a few hours (mostly to play around) into it.  Really, it'd be quite easy to finish it off.... if anyone was interested.

Regardless, I would be more than happy to convert one for you and put it up, just email me.  As well, I think there are others on this board willing to.

A conversion program would be useful, would make things a lot easier.

or just make the ypcenter compatible with boardmod files.

but you'll still need the converter routines then.

It now IS compatible, to my knowledge.

I've written a little YaBBpak maker... but I need to improve it.  Right now, it just makes all files by default Packages/modification.***.... very useful for small mods, but I'll eventually improve it.

In answer to the original question.  Could you keep a copy of the noard off line?  Then appliy the mod with Boardmod?  After that, just upload the changed files?

That's how I do mine.

I assume "It" == "YaBBSE 1.4.1" in this case?
If so, how would I manage to grab these for installation? *curious*

"It" would be 1.5.x....

And what do you mean by "grab"?
