Multiple user groups?

The board that I run has two private areas.  One is for the moderators and global mods to do their thing.  The other is for a select group of members for private conversations.  My problem is that some of my moderators are members of the other hidden area and some are not.  I can't give access to those moderators without giving access to all of the moderator so I'm at an impass.

I've already set up a completely seperate forum for the private area and am going to remove the old private section but I have in it's place created a "button" to link to the new board.  So I've still got the same problem as before.  Currently that button is visible to anyone who has access to the moderators forum and the private area because of the cross over with some of my moderators.

I'm not sure I explained this well and quite frankly I'm not sure this is the place to post this but I'm figuring it would take a mod of some sort to remedy the problem.  Since I am less than an amateur at php I need your help.   Please ::)

Well I developed a mod for my Clan site called ummm
can't remember but ill find it for you what it does is adds the security needed for this extra group I can modify it so that it will allow members from other gropus aswell but you will have to edit the PHP for that by adding a line for each of the users, I have not yet updated to work for certain members aswell as a certain member group, at current all my Clan members are Global Moderators, so on the global mod group in my mod I say global mods have access then added a line to the if statement or group = administrator but it would be easy to change to or user = $test

And have a simple array for the username so you just add another line to the array using copy paste and adjust the values inside the " " very simple to do I could release a new version of it but im not really into PHP at the moment im on a lazy spell.

I've got my php guy working on adding a check box to the user profile that can only be set by the admins.  We'll be adding a row to the user table that will default to 0.  When the box is checked that row will be set to one.  Only people with the one will be given access to the private areas.

Doh! Gotta run!  I see him pounding his head on the keyboard for some reason.  LOL.

Thanks for the help tdodnz.  I appreciate any input into this that I can get. ;D
