The background works fine in 800 x 600 but my friend said it doesn't fit at all in 1280 x 1024

Huh?  Thats the background that I want.  and it works fine if your screen res is at 800 x 600.  But when your screen is set aat 1280 x 1024 it gets messed up...

There is nothing you can do except open it in a graphics editor and stretch it.  The background will *always* tile unless you use the css repeat selector to stop that, but if you stop the repeat, you will have big open space all over your page at high resolution.

either you make the bg image connects in tile or make it not repeat (as mephisto said): background-repeat: no-repeat;

If i were to enlarge the image to 1280 x 1024 would it run over on 8x6?

No, you will only have that if the image is too small, not when it is too big.

So making the image 1208 x 1024 would make it look perfect with 8 x 6....
