installing mysql, apache, and php on linux

well, after all the problems I've been having with Win32 I've finally come to the conclusion to convert my webserver over to Unix.  I'm not completely familiar with running a server in unix and the whole process is kinda new to me.  I am somewhat familiar with Linux however.. I've compiled a bunch of programs and I'm familiar wit the basic layout of the config files.

I am however having a problem compiling these programs with the correct parameters and configging them right.  Is there a "newbie" guide on how to install the backend programs on linux to get it working with yabb?

mysql is the biggest pain in the butt for me so far.  im using slackware which is supposed to support rpm so i tried the rpm package but everytime i try to install it it gives me a dependecy error on sh and perl5.. which i did a whereis and the files are in the appropriate directories... doesn't make sense

so, i tried just installing mysql from the distro package... this obviously seemed to work great but when i try to run it, it throws errors back at me.. (can't remember the exact ones cuz im at work).  i did some searching on what the error meant and one thing was not making the admin tables?  so i ran the script to create those tables and it still doesn't work...  could really use some help with this one if at all possible... if anyone is familiar with the slackware distro u can probably help me out.

as for php?  apache?  i managed to get this installed on a test server after compiling and copying some files over ... im sure i can probalby get this running.. mysql is just the biggest thing.. but if anyone has a step-by-step walkthru on how to do the whole process that would be fabulous..
