Users more than one membergroup

I'm sure I'm not the only one that has members who are in more than one membergroup.

to  get around access to various categories I have to create additional membergroups

eg
Soldier
Major
Lieutenant
General

to acsess a category for Lieutenants and Generals I had to create special category "star general".

Is there a way to have members of several membergroups and having access to all the forums and categories that each of those membergroups can access without having to create special combined membergroups.

I see it has just been done for SP1.  Would be fantastic if it could be done for YaBB SE.
