Is there any way to make it so the message index indicates a post that contains an attachment?

Like the polls, they have their own little icon indicating that that post contains a poll.....

Is this possible for attachments?

It's possible yes - but it would add a lot of overhead to your message index...as it would add a mysql query for every topic displayed - so you're talking about 20 more queries....which is a big load....
