Quote from: Alex Rolko on January 02, 2002, 12:04:22 AMSo blame Corey that he never put skining into YaBB1Gold and the fact that skinning is big task to undertake.

Don't say that!  He didn't design the template system, if we're going to lay blame, where the hell is Zef  ;D

If you're going to blame Corey, you have to come after the rest of that that worked on it as well...

Ok I'm out then. It takes little skill to simply modify sources to your liking. Real skill involvs using your limited options and doing something great with them. Here CSS plays a major role... and believe it or not you can do a lot with it.

If I wasn't so busy and I might not in the furture with some motivation I could finish what I started when yabb 1 was released, more CSS entries and less HTML.

I planned this but it is a major task, problem is I will never make this a mod since it modifies just too much of the YaBB code.

I could do it little by little when YaBB SE becomes stable and core development stops so I have the time... has it stopped anyway?

Basically what something like this involves is almost every object in YaBB's code having a class attached to it. But not new classes of course, inheritance and stuff would play a major role, so the thing would be compatible with old templates.

Just an idea, which could become a reality if the time permits :)

Yeah, that's definitely what needs to be done. YaBB has started slightly in that direction, but not enough. In YaBB Gold, at least, there was just too much hard-coded into the board. As you said, everything needs to be given a class in order to make the CSS really effective. Myself, I would also use an external CSS file instead of imbedding all the definitions into the template.html, too, because it would probably cut down on load and be a little more efficient/organized.

While we will accept submissions that require modification of the php code, templates that DON'T require such modifications will receive a better evaluation.

The point of this competition is to come up with a template, not a mod.

We really would prefer it if you can do it without modifying the source-code.

The competition may be to come up with a template, not a Mod -- however, what alienine has suggested is something that really does need to be undertaken in the future. YaBB 1 Gold - SP1 seems to have moved further in that direction by including more CSS styles (and grouping/commenting them much better than before!).

My guess (and I'm sure there are a few of you who might know better and could tell me otherwise) is that YaBB 2 will have all but eliminated hard coded colors and used more CSS styles to define colors and fonts and everything else. It'd be nice if a future version of YaBB SE would do the same... since I don't plan to ever go back to Perl-based YaBB.  ;D

(Although I must say that I LOVED YaBB 1 Gold SP1.. but this is faster, and currently my board is quite stable, thank you. ;))

As far as I know, we ported over all changes that were in SP1...but as SE progresses, you'll see many many changes all for the better ;)
