memory size exhausted error

I'm getting memory size exhausted error while trying to convert 1.4 version to 1.54. The database is pretty large (about 24MB). Here is error while running upgrade

Data inserted successfully!


Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted at (null):0 (tried to allocate 10 bytes) in /var/www/html/forum/upgrade.php on line 220

Any idea how to fix this? Should I change execution time in php.ini?
