This is for a couple reasons. First, sending a plain text version of your password back and forth every time you edit your profile is very insecure.  Second, because YaBB SE Stores the passwords in an encrypted format, they can't be decrypted, so we can't populate that field for you.

If you leave the fields blank, your password won't be changed.  If you fill them out, your password will be changed, and you will most likely be logged out to re-authenticate.

when I change the password, and it logs me out, I can't log in with the new password, I still have to use the old one.

Add a reserved name to your boards reserved names and see if that helps...you're using 1.0.0?
