Hehe he is asking because a lot of programs still downloadble have php3 as the extension.

Anyway PHP4 has been out ages and I dont know of *any* scripts using the .php4 extension.
Is there any difference in the two? .php and .php4? Or is it just like .pl and .cgi extensions?  ::)

It's just like .pl and .cgi.  In fact, I could name all my PHP files .se and they would work provided I add that in my Apache config file.

Our bug tracker came shipped with php3 extensions by default :)
