Yeah I know.. lol funny thing is that working with the current YaBB smilies was SO MUCH easier.. like it took be just as long to make my smiley pack ones all together as it took these ones.. but I'm cool with that... coz it actually fun lol..

I'd appreciate any feedback concerning the ones I just made..

Quote from: alienine on January 16, 2003, 10:24:34 AMThanks for all the pickyness!

Here are the big ones I promised.. in two variations..

Second style border, which wors almost perfect in all background colours except a certain shades of gray where it is still acceptable..

Btw people its almost impossible to have anti-aliased borders and no jaggedness at least a little, well with Fireworks anyway..

UPDATE: Well I noticed the eyes on some of them are too closed, so for the happyier ones I made them a little bigger.. they arte smaller for the negative emotions.. olike here:

I really don't know anymore.. I think i spent too much time today with these little things LOL

I love the "second style border" ones :). They look very cute, and aren't too sharp on their borders :).

It's a damned shame that IE doesn't support PNG transparency, if it did, it'd be easy to have lovely anti-aliased edges on things like smileys and buttons.

Admittedly, this guy shows you how to make iB style smilies, but if you are trying to make some smoother smilies, you can adapt his technique to your needs:

Could you release png versions of the small ones anyhow, it will just give people more reasons to switch to the good browsers. ;)

Ah good point, I think MNG supports it but I don't know how many browsers can view that.

There's a story about 'cross-browser variable opacity with PNG' over at A List Apart, but there are transparency solutions it doesn't mention. Specifically, in my experience, although full alpha transparency is not yet widely supported, simple transparency in 4 and 8 bit PNGs has worked in IE since at least IE5 (likewise Opera 5). So, if you just want straightforward icons etc. anti-aliased to your page background, you're looking back to version 4 browsers (eg Netscape 4.x) before their transparent parts become opaque.

So I've always been a great PNG fan and only use GIFs for animations or situations where this kind of transparency is still critical (less and less!) for folks who might still be 'stuck' with Netscape 4!

PS I might add that, although I thought the article I've linked to looked interesting, I don't think I could personally be bothered with the kind of JavaScript solutions it goes into.

I CAN in fact later release NON animated PNGs, with the animated ones simply one frame.. the most important one.. so you get the idea. They do look great in Opera, and its a shame IE is so slow on the uptake of any kind of new technology. Next Post I make will be a link to all the smilies... where you can view each one and download them in a ZIP.

Animation isn't that big of a deal for me so if you have the time PNG versions would be appreciated. :)
