Next Generation YaBB Smileys

I had a lookie at a few other message boards and one in particular (Invision Board) had a nice set of icons... only usable on their boards...

I had a look back at the YaBB icons and thought what the hell I'll make my own set, but I'll make them a little different... but still the kinda the same hehe...

The beautiful thing about these is i can replace all the colours with a few clicks, meaning I can make whole sets in seconds... I'm even thinking of releasing the originals so its way easier for people to customise them for their own boards...

So here are the little buggers... Expect another 20 colour schemes or so on that site i mentioned in my other thread if I decide to go along with it..

Go ahead, here my thaughts:
  • kiss.gif is missing, also laugh.gif
  • the border appears a little fat
  • the standard grin.gif looks better for me, because the teeth are important for making the grin impression:
;D
your grin.gif looks like laughing, you could take this one for laugh.gif

border's like that so the thing looks proper on all backgrounds..

the kiss one i made.. just didn't add it here i think.. fixed now.. its the last one..

The thing is I don't see the laugh one on these forums.. so i presumed its not used...there is a cheesy.gif though..

They look quite better in original form since the border isn't subject to flat transparency.. which is one of the problems associated with making antialiased graphics..

The good thing is that the border thing I can quickly change, so I can leave it up to the users... personally I like the stronger border, but here's how it would look with a normal border:

Oh and I also had a go at the grin..

Having now relaised that the above grin is too chubby I am giving my best shot with this one... which is as close as I can get to the spirit of the grin..

== ;D ?

Need more picky feedback!

Our smilies are smaller than other forums aren't they? Invision has larger ones right?

I tried them on a dark grey background and the edges seem to have some light colours along them.
Other then that I like them.

I like them :)

Since they have more details than before, I agree that all seems a little too compact :P

Maybe do them bigger, and with a thin border?
And the grin would be great with teeth separation :)
The eyes seems funny :)

Great job :P

Good ansatz, mephisto_kur.

The boarder needs some improvement, better if hey all have equal size, and the grin needs the really grinny teeth. I know well that making of smileys is more than work of seconds, at least if one wants to make good smileys.  :)

If your smileys are finished, you are welcome to put them on my YaBB Smiley Sets site (of course you will be given full credit).

Just some ideas to "next generation" smileys: for me personally the new generation is quite spoiled in smileys, that means new is not simply bigger such as increasing from 15x15 to 17x17, 19x19 or 20x20 size. "New" for me is for example a full body smiley like the santas, angels or snowmen or ethnic smileys like the afro smileys... If using just simple round smileys the plain yellow (FFFF00) 15x15 set will do for my board. The classical smiley is just yellow. Also the standard gold smileys distributed with the board software are not bad.

I just bounced into an idea... why not have both! I can release large sized icons and small sized ones... so you pick! Btw I have made them larger and made their eyes better for the large size, I'll post them up in my next post... once I fix some things... I am serious about releasing the originals, since it would make making custom ones so much easier..

Thanks for all the pickyness!

Here are the big ones I promised.. in two variations..

Second style border, which wors almost perfect in all background colours except a certain shades of gray where it is still acceptable..

Btw people its almost impossible to have anti-aliased borders and no jaggedness at least a little, well with Fireworks anyway..

UPDATE: Well I noticed the eyes on some of them are too closed, so for the happyier ones I made them a little bigger.. they arte smaller for the negative emotions.. olike here:

I really don't know anymore.. I think i spent too much time today with these little things LOL
