Great app but one let down.

Hi Guys,

I have run the YabbSE for quite a while now and i find it a great Forum for the price. However I have one or two issues I would like to mention, it may not be the right forum to post this but anyway...

One issue is that when a plonker gives a bogus email address to signup through the "please provide an email address to sign up" part, they're signed up anyway. I find this to be very wrong.

The second issue is due to the first. When I email a message to my members I get all those invalid email bounced back to the server and then I have to go into a manual grep to find the users owning those addresses to finally remove them by hand. Any solutions have been done to address those two things?

Thanks, BTW I am running 1.4.1 at the mo.

Keep up the Xcellent work guys!
;)

Make it send them a password, this will require a valid email address.

Hi,

What do you mean? The option to provide an email address is on and the user get a password sent to them. but this action still add them in the list of members. What I would like is simply a system where they are not added to the list of members until they come back and use the password sent to them.

Thanks

go to Admin section -> Forum Preferences and Settings -> put a check on "Email Random Password to New Member Upon Registration"

if u do this, all new members will get their random password through the email address they provided
after they logon the first time, they can change their password

I have had thoughts about making accounts expire if they aren't logged in to within X days....

If you look in the admin panel, you can see all members who haven't posted for xx days.  Type "100" in that box and hit enter... you will see everyone who has not ever logged in with a REALLY high number.

maybe a better way is to check if log_topics and log_boards
because a user can still go and look around the board without participating/posting

But the issue is that they cannot login without a valid email.

Hey bib,
My next mod I'm working on will do something similar to what you are asking. Members won't be automatically added to the memberlist until they reply to an email that is sent to them.

Basically it creates a random string of text and tacks that on to a url, when they go to it their account is created. This is common to a lot of other forum software and other signup scripts and as you mention prevents people using bogus or wrong email addresses from being added.

Yes, the validation is already there and available in the settings.php.

If expanded upon I sincerely hope that the feature can be switched on/off. I run a writing site and have joined a number of my characters to discuss themselves as requested. Having to create a valid e-mail for each of them first would have potentially compromised the issue - some of us are still on 56k's!

I figure e-mail addresses are a little too impermanent to attach too great a significance to.

Just feedback.

that is true too... I really hate it myself when I have to receive and email first then login and the change the pass... hmm...

maybe using an email validation script in php or javascript would solve the problem, it's not a perfect solution, but it'll be enough in most of the cases without more trouble for the person registering, since most of the time, when the email is wrong, it's because of a typo, not that the person submitted a false email on purpose

another simple way of making sure is to have the person confirm the email address by writting it again, like they do with passwords

those two things combined are a really simple solution and will work great in most cases, what do you think?

I don't see why this is any better than having it email them a password....

cause you don't need to receive the email and then go back to the forum and login... it's done without having to do something extra...

or maybe the account could be activated right away and an email sent too, but if you don't follow the link in the email in less than 1 day or something like that, the account goes inactive...
