Title: Help Cure Cancer Contest
Post by: Joseph Fung on April 25, 2002, 12:50:56 PM
The YaBB and YaBB SE teams are calling out for members to help fight cancer.  The project is run by United Devices in a distributed computing effort much like the SETi@Home project.  The way it works, is you download the client (http://members.ud.com/download/gold/) and either sign up with your existing account, or let it walk you through the registration process.  Once you've installed the client, it will download data from the UD server, process it on your idle clock cycles, and return the results once your package of data is complete.

It's great because there is minimal impact on your machine, but when you add up that little bit of processing from a large number of users - it can really make an difference.

The way we've made this into a contest is as follows: when you're processing data, you earn points at ud.com - the points are based primarily on how much time you spend processing and how much processing power you can bring to the cause.  The YaBB and YaBB SE teams are offering a free CD to the member that signs up between now and May 31st who earns the most points.  That's two teams, one CD for each team.

Once you've registered you can join the YaBB SE team by following this link (http://members.ud.com/services/teams/team.htm?id=813A2386-DA2D-4060-AA0B-4D6C1122B97A), or you can check out the YaBB 1 Gold team by following this one (http://members.ud.com/services/teams/team.htm?id=5EB1D152-67C3-4276-BE94-77E3811BA3F8).

If you're interested, here is some more information about the project (http://members.ud.com/projects/cancer/index.htm), and if you have any further questions, feel free to email either of the team captains: joseph@lewismedia.com and cchapman@xnull.com

Why not offer them a free YaBB (se) board instead of the expansive UBB forum (the can use the money!)  ;D

What about those of us who already signed up ??? I have 8,600 points! I suppose I could rename my device and sign up again, but that falls into the dirty trick catagory.  ;)

By the way people this is a screen saver that does a lot more than draw useless pictures on the screen. While you are not using your computer it is looking for possible cancer treatment drugs.
JUST DO IT

The point of it is to be a recruitment campaign, I'm afraid those of you enrolled (even Jef, Zef and myself) are out of the running.  And dirty tricks are indeed frowned upon  ;)

That's OK, I didn't start doing it for goodies anyway. This is the best seceensaver ever Instead of pictures I get satisfaction. Priceless.

(Please don't mind my English).

A good initiative, this 'contest'. I've read about the Help Cure Cancer project before, but never took the effort to really figure out how it works.

But now there is a YaBB-team I think I'll be joining it.

I've just got some questions for the people who joined it earlier: Are you sure there isn't any spy- or adware in this software?

And could you explain in simple English (Or perhaps Dutch, Edwin?) just how this program works (does it only run when I'm not working at my PC?) and whether there are any minimal system requirements? The point is: My regular PC is broken and now I'm working at an oldtimer (P1, 200MHz with 64MB SDRAM or someting like that) and I'd like to now if I can still work on it, when UD is running.

Thanks in advance for the explanation and while I'm at it: Thanks for YaBB and this good initiative to!

It works all the time - but when you are using the computer it works less.  If you are off your computer, it will do more.

Yes, you can install it on your older computer, and no, there is no spy ware.  I used ad-aware to search and found no spy ware.

No spyware, I've been running it for several months now. It functions as a screen saver or a background app. I believe it will wotk on your present system. If you use a fire wall be sure to give the .exe premission to access the net.

Thanks for your quick answers. Just 1 other question (perhaps also nice for future reference by other wannabe-members):

It functions as a screen saver or a background app.

Can I configure it that it will only run as a screensaver and not at the backgrond while I'm working? They can have all my CPU-'power' when I'm doing something else but when I'm working I really need all the memory and CPU I can get at this old bastard.

Post by: Joseph Fung on April 25, 2002, 03:58:39 PM
Yes you can do that :)

If you click on the config button (the checkmark) you can toggle onthe run only as screen saver

Also, for those of you who didn't know, you can install the client on multiple machines under the same account.  As you can see in the screenshot below, I have 2 machines running.

Just wondering how would you know this distributed computing thing is actually working on curing cancer and not a defense project to develop biological weapons or crack spy codes or... OH!
Quote
How do I know you will actually do useful and scientifically valid computations on my computer?
United Devices is working on this project with the University of Oxford, the National Foundation for Cancer Research, and Intel-all highly visible, well-respected organizations. Please feel free to review the web sites of each of these organizations to confirm their involvement.

In addition, our members can see the project themselves via the UD Agent interface. UD is committed to Member involvement—Members will always have information about the project that their machines are working on.

Gee.  I'm glad they didn't say Microsoft was involved, or I'd have known for sure I was going to get screwed.    I guess I can park my Matrix screensaver for awhile and give it a try!

On the YaBB 1 Gold team maybe, we still have 27 members as we started this thing several months ago.  So far I've been fighting cancer for 115 days.

Just a question:

I'd like to help the project. I have a PC that is always connected to the Internet and no one is working on it. It's a PIII 500 and the Programm could use all the Power the Machine has, but not all of the internet connection. Can someone tell me how much of the up and downstream the program needs ? If it isn't that much, i'm willing to give the entire power of the machine to the project. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ...

Precious little bandwidth. It only checks in in when the process has finished the assignment given to your computer.

Also, you can tell when it needs a new block of data, because when it tries to connect, and fails it flashes a yellow exclamation mark in the system tray.

I didnt actually start another one, before I joined your team I was already a member of another team. So I simply left that one joined yours, then go back to my own team because it was revieved :)

My team is here (http://members.ud.com/services/teams/team.htm?id=A08416C2-7895-4FBE-8201-6190E11E2480) Its not exactly the most impressive stats I know.

I had heard of UD and this project, but never installed the client until I found out SE had a team.  I joined right away.

I just read this thread again and found out there was a contest involved, joy!  ;D

What is on this "CD" that the winners get?

Some little bits of info:

If we can get our member numbers up to 31 we can overtake Jaguar Cars
See   the members page (listed ~620) (http://members.ud.com/stats/teams/members.htm?rsps=250&rscp=3)

On the processing charts we're around 2471
Processing time (http://members.ud.com/stats/teams/cpu_time.htm?rsps=250&rscp=10)
Just behind the medical college of Ohio and Team Motorola.

Keep up the good work :)

Team YaBB SE has a new member! 30 total!

question:

can the winner donate his/her CD and just have it directly sent to the place its donated to?

The cure cancer agent only uses 18KB data files so I don't think it needs to access the hard drive :)
Title: Re:Help Cure Cancer Contest
Post by: vorapoap (vory) on April 30, 2002, 03:40:18 AM
Greg, well.. you may be right.. But I don't think so.. The agent should save the analyzed data frequently, so you wouldn't lose 1 whole hour of analysist if your computer crash or something.. Don't you think so??

For SETI@Home, it saves the data every 1 minute.

To bring this back into focus, we've got a total of 34 current members, with the winner currently touting 4,151 points and they've only been a member for 10 days.  It's still possible to win, and it's still possible to make a difference so don't hesitate to join :)

For the cause, I decided to start my own team to harness the power of a seemingly untapped wealth of CPU power. I started the PoserHeads team aimed at the CG community. (We need those rendering boxes running UD when they are not drawing pictures)

In a little over a week we have aquired 25 members and have generated 63,000 points.  Very cool!

Thanks to the YaBB community for turning me on to this great cause.

I still have a few more computers to install it on at work, but have not got around to it.  I think I have 10 installs now, 3 at home and 7 at work.  The ones at work, I had to install them to only run between 5pm and 7am.  But I didn't dare install UD on the big machines, like the SQL servers.

I know I definitely posted it on the 25th of April.

We're going to go by the join dates on the UD website.  It is, however, down at the moment.

Phark, If the site says you joined before the 25th of April, I'm affraid you'll be ineligible.  I'm sorry if you remember joining on a different date, but I need to go by what records we have - I hope you understand.

If you are *sure* joined after the contest started, is it possible you registered early, but just re-downloaded the client after the contest start?

It does say that I registered on March 29th.  I think I may know what has happened.  I did join in March, but maybe I joined the team after April 25th.  I am just trying to figure out how these dates could have gotten all twisted up in my head.  *stops to consult with the voices*   :o

Unfortunatly, UD does not show when I installed all the clients, but I do know that I installed them after I joined that SE team so that I could catch up.

I've quit the YaBB SE team to form my own team. It has been nice calculating for the YaBB SE team, but it's getting lonely at the top ;D. Now I have my own team, I'm hoping to get even more people of my WieIsDeMol.Com community interested in installing this very nice tool.

This topic deserves to get bumped to the top (although the first page doesn't seem to work  :o). Everyone, download and install this program (http://members.ud.com/download/), join the YaBB SE team (http://members.ud.com/services/teams/team.htm?id=813A2386-DA2D-4060-AA0B-4D6C1122B97A) (or the WieIsDeMol.Com team (http://members.ud.com/services/teams/team.htm?id=97197140-5E71-4E97-9F85-0C346B3CB127)) and help find a cure against cancer.
