Title: Why can I not stay logged in?
Post by: Meriadoc on December 20, 2001, 07:52:04 PM
If you keep logging in and keep getting logged out, chances are the cookie names were changed for the board. What you need to do to fix this problem is to delete the current YaBB SE cookies on your computer.
In Internet Explorer you can do this by going to Tools -> Internet Options. Click the Settings button in the General tab, and then View Files. You can either delete all the files, or just find the specific cookie you need to delete. Look for the domain name of the site the forum is on.
This should solve your problem

In addition to doing this, also change the YaBBSE Cookie Name to something different, in the Admin -> Forum Preferences and Settings section, such that it does not conflict with any other boards in use. Change it to something unique, like "1337YaBBSEboard" that will not likely be in use by another thing on your site.

This problem occured when I changed:
$cookieusername = "YaBBusername";
and
$cookiepassword = "YaBBpassword";

to my own values. I changed my own values back to YaBBusername and YaBBpassword and the problem was solved.

Guys the problem is internet explorer 6 and cookies I made a tutorial about fixing it:
------------
Some people have a problem to stay logged in to this forum using ie. 6.0 and this forum I will explain how to get it working here:

1: go to http://yoursite.com (http://yoursite.com)
2: make sure that you are logged in
3: next to your status bar you see a little icon that looks like I "stop" sign, double click it

Screenshot
http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/mf.kraakman/tutorial.jpg (http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/mf.kraakman/tutorial.jpg)

4: double click the top url, you should get the following screen: http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/mf.kraakman/tutorial1.jpg (http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/mf.kraakman/tutorial1.jpg)

5: Select "Always allow this site to use cookies" and click ok

6: ENJOY! it should work now!
-----------
There you go

^ Thats also another fix if you are infact using IE 6 and you have a higher safty level set in Internet Options. Also If your using Windows XP you do use IE 6 (if you use IE at all)

Its the same way with IE 5.5 and earlier versions.

This is NOT an IE problem, I have the same problem with Opera and Netscape. Opera doesn't have savety levels at all. In every browser I deleted all the cookies, but the problem stays.
Title: Re:Why can I not stay logged in?
Post by: Wezz6400 on December 27, 2001, 07:15:23 AM
Actually it is pretty easy to fix this problem: just do not use any spaces in the name of your cookies. For example: instead of "YaBB Username" use "YaBB_Username" or "YaBBUsername."

well people, i´ve got the same problem after converting a gold-board to SE! the first time i did it, the conversion has gone pretty good and everything is ok, despite some users experiencing cookie-troubles with IE6, but that´s no realy important problem and easy to fix ;)

but its NOT a cookieproblem, ´cause i´m running two different boards on my server with each using the same cookienames, and there is NO problem with it!

my actual problem is that after running converter.php SUCCESSFULLY (!) for another board, i´m no more able to login as an admin!!! ahm, not fully correct, i´m able to LOGIN, but get kicked off, if i want to enter my admin-tool!
normal users are also kicked off. i tried to change the cookienames, and also tried every troubleshooting i could find here, but nothing worked!
btw.: i´ve ran the install.php 5 times yet, and every time these problems occured!

some ideas?

sorry for my english and greetz from germany

Just a quick question.  Has anyone found a solution for the multimania/lycos cookie problems?  I've tried all of the above suggestions, and it still isn't working for me.  This has just started happening in the past couple of weeks though.  When multimania was just simply multimania, I never had any cookie problems at all.

Title: Re:Why can I not stay logged in?
Post by: mediman on April 15, 2002, 05:11:35 PM
you can rewrite yabbse that it works with session_id in url but its´much better to search a better freehost!

and also payhosts costs not so much, there are good payhost for about 7€ p.m. where you have telnet, php 4.1.2 w/bugfix newest mysql and so on....

With my board If I log in then close my browser and go back to my board, it thinks I'm a guest and tells me to log in. If I click on "log in", before I enter my user name or password the board logs me in automatically so i can click on admin from the log in page.

On this support board, if i close my browser and come back my cookies work fine and I'm still logged in.

I've tried everything on this thread and the "login trouble" thread and nothing's worked. I've tried accepting all cookies including third party and allowing session cookies but it doesn't make a difference. I am using Internet Explorer 6. I've tried Opera and the same thing happens there so surely it must be something to do with the code or configuration of the board?? I'm using the 1.3 version by the way and the board is at

I did a new install of YaBBSE 1.3.0 late last night and have spent the rest of the morning trying to get the login straightened out.  I understand the cookie problem, deleted cookies, renamed cookies, tried everything I can think of.  If I use Netscape or MSIE I can't stay logged in.  If I use Opera I stay logged in fine.  With MSIE I set the options to prompt before accepting cookies.  When logging in I do get a prompt to accept the cookies but still get logged out when I try to move away from the index page.  Help would be appreciated.

Maybe I'm repeating now something what already was posted many many times, but I'm going to say it anyway: (I'm new here, so I don't realy know how everything is going on here)

It makes a huge difference which host you've got, I've got the same problem, on my Endoria (dutch host), so I can't stay logged in with IE, but on the same Endoria host I can stay logged in, when I'm using Mozzila, same goes to this host, I can't stay logged in, with IE on this YaBBSE board, except with Mozilla, then it works perfectly. But my brother is running on our local network also a host with YaBBSE and I can stay logged in on this host with Mozilla but also with Internet Explorer!!!! Very strange...

(excuses for my english again, it's bad, I know, but I'm used to use Dutch on the forum of YaBB.nl (http://www.yabb.nl/cgi-bin/forums/YaBB.pl) :-[ :-X :-[ (hope you can understand (a little bit) what I'm posting...))

Thats because http://yabb.info/community and http://www.yabb.info/community are two different things.  Without the www. you will NOT be logged in when joining the board but as soon you hit the first link on the board that has the www. in it, say the login screen....the board remembers you then.  Check your bookmark that use to go your board and see if you included the www.  This drove me nuts for MONTHS trying to figure it out.

As much as this topic has been beaten to hell I still can't seem to get this to work.

We have moved our forum to a new location and I can't get it to keep anyone logged in.

I have tried sll the trick and tips that have been posted in here and still nothing.

I have added the trusted sites, made sure cookies were enabled, changed the cookie names, removed the www from the heading of the board URL .. and still I have nothing.

I don't know what else to try.
And the screwed thing is .. on this forum, I didn't even need to have the trusted site added and it worked.
What is it that you guys have done that I haven't thought of to make this work!!!
Someone please help me .. I am getting very frustrated.

The site is hosted on www.your-site.com.  I have paid for the hosting and it still isn't working.  A fresh install of YabbSE 1.3 and the server isn't in safe mode.

I don't know what else to do .. I need to get this running ASAP.

Nasty, start a new topic under Other Help and then post a URL to your site so we can take a peek.

I won't be around as I'm going to a Mothers Day dinner, then watching Dinotopia, and then watching the Leafs game.

However, I will check in sometime during those shows :)

i just got a domain and my users cannot stay logged in.

I know why. It is because the URL cloaking is on... i would like a solution other than turning URL cloaking off. For some reason the cookies arent allowed when url cloaking is on. I can easily allow them then it works. But id rather have another solution because

(a) i dont want to turn off URL cloaking
(b) i do not want to have to explain to everyone on how to allow the cookies

thanks in advance

And with over 10,000 diffrent servers and each one can be configured diffrently. Something bound to not work right. O by the way I don't have a stay log in problem here either.  ;D

Two I released 1.4.1 yesterday so try it...

Please treat us with respect. This is your first post. How are we suppose to know if you are having any problems? I am glad you are trying to use our Message Board if you need help, post a topic in one of the help board. Then we can help you out.

One thing I noticed on reading some PHP.net faq.

Many people had the types of errors described here (though not for forums) and have seemed to narrow it down to verisons of IE, etc not liking the "optional" settings NOT used.

For example.. the path and domain name is not requires, but some flavors of IE tended to like it a little better.

Also tied in to my previous posts of the www.domain.com vs domain.com issue is the specification of the domain name in the cookie.

I suggest changing the setcookie() notation to be:

Code: [Select]
setcookie(name,value,time, "/", ".domain.com")

The two additional parameters state use the entire directory path "/" and the ".domain.com" (note the beginning period) is to hit all variations of your site:

www.doman.com
domain.com
mail.domain.com

etc.

the beginning period is a throwback to the spec requiring TWO periods in the domain name specification to be proper.

I no longer have a cookie problem on my board.. so i can't say this is the end all, be all..  but its worth a shot.

you are just specifying explicitly what the optional values are suggesting

LogInOut.php

search:
Code: [Select]
setCookie ($cookieusername,$username, time()+30240000,"/");
setCookie ($cookiepassword,$password, time()+30240000,"/");
setCookie ("expiretime",time()+(60*$Cookie_Length),time()+30240000,"/");

and replace with

Code: [Select]
setCookie ($cookieusername,$username, time()+30240000,"/yabbse/", ".yourdomain.com");
setCookie ($cookiepassword,$password, time()+30240000,"/yabbse/", ".yourdomain.com");
setCookie ("expiretime",time()+(60*$Cookie_Length),time()+30240000,"/yabbse/", ".yourdomain.com");

delete your old cookies and login

What about the setCookie calls in the Logout() function of LogInOut.php?

Also, shouldn't the "/yabbse/" part just be "/" since not everyone calls their directory by that name and / will work the same won't it?
Title: Re:Why can I not stay logged in?
Post by: medizinmann on August 23, 2002, 09:55:26 PM
if your yabbse folder is blabla then please change yabbse with blabla, but dont make only a / if you have your yabb se in a folder!

if you only set a / then you can have trouble if you use other script´s on your domain with cookies! i know about phpnuke and a quizzscript!

This should also change in Load.php and Profile.php shouldn't it?

I noticed this in the Load.php file:
"/* clear the cookies note that in php, setCookie is called in reverse order - so we set it to an expired time 'after' clearing it */"

...yet on the PHP page about setCookie it says this is no longer true in PHP4:
" In PHP 3, multiple calls to setcookie() in the same script will be performed in reverse order. If you are trying to delete one cookie before inserting another you should put the insert before the delete. In PHP 4, multiple calls to setcookie() are performed in the order called."

Could it be the cause of the problem?
Title: Re:Why can I not stay logged in?
Post by: Roundboy on August 28, 2002, 06:50:18 PM
That sounds like a possibility... but... then wouldn't that mean that nobodys cookies would work?
Title: Re:Why can I not stay logged in?
Post by: mediman on August 28, 2002, 06:59:40 PM
setcookie has in yabbse to be in the same order like deleting the cookie, right!

another prob is that ie 4 Sp1 cannot handle cookies with parameter "path"! Netscape 4.05 and IE 3 need the parameter path and time!

well.. those using IE 3 or 4 and netscape 4.05 have bigger problems then cookies...  time to upgrade people.

Yes.. cookies should be called as you wat them to set..

so:

setcookie("name") // delete cookie
setcookie(name value time path domain) // set cookie

thats how it should be called

Ya I think the cookie problem is more to do with old browsers then the code itself. Most people who have had the problem on my board are using older browsers like IE 5.

This code is for the logout function, make sure you have medizinmann's code installed as well.

Code: [Select]
  setCookie($cookieusername);
   setCookie($cookieusername,'',time()-3600,"/");
   setCookie($cookiepassword);
   setCookie($cookiepassword,'',time()-3600,"/");
   setCookie('expiretime','-1');

and replace with

Code: [Select]
  setCookie($cookieusername);
   setCookie($cookieusername,'',time()-3600,"/yabbse/",".yourdomain.com");
   setCookie($cookiepassword);
   setCookie($cookiepassword,'',time()-3600,"/yabbse/",".yourdomain.com");
   setCookie('expiretime','-1',time()-3600,"/yabbse/",".yourdomain.com");

be sure to replace "/yabbse" with the actual directory of your board..

or leave it to "/" if you allow ppl to have one universal login for your site...

So far only one of my members has gotten this error:
/forum/index.php?board=;action=login2
2: Supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource
(/home/virtual/site509/fst/var/www/html/forum/Sources/BoardIndex.php ln 49)

I have been talking with her forever now giving her all of these solutions for her to try, and none seem to have worked yet.

She can log in, but then when she goes to check her instant messages or post on a board, it tells her she must log in to do so.

Perhaps I missed the solution to this while trying most of them in this thread. If you know of a definite fix, please let me know!

Title: Re:Why can I not stay logged in?
Post by: mediman on August 30, 2002, 02:26:04 PM
she has to delete her cookies from harddisk! maybe she is a member in another board or she has an older cookie from your board! logout is not enough!

mediman

p.s. she has to set the security level for your site to low or at least medium!
Title: Re:Why can I not stay logged in?
Post by: drinkitbitch on August 30, 2002, 02:30:38 PM
i had her searching through all the cookies, but she couldnt find the specifc files and didnt want to delete everything because she isnt the only person that uses that computer. I'll have her change the security settings next time i talk to her and see if that works.

That is a mySQL error... not cookies...

line 49 is a if($result) line..

meaning the sql query done before that did not 'query' properly...

This one in fact:
Code: [Select]
$result = mysql_query("SELECT COUNT(*) as totalm FROM {$db_prefix}messages as m,{$db_prefix}boards as b,{$db_prefix}topics as t,{$db_prefix}categories as c WHERE (m.ID_TOPIC=t.ID_TOPIC && t.ID_BOARD=b.ID_BOARD && b.ID_CAT=c.ID_CAT && ('$settings[7]'='Administrator' || '$settings[7]'='Global Moderator' || FIND_IN_SET('$settings[7]',c.memberGroups)!=0 || c.memberGroups=''))");

looks like it couldn't count the board totals properly when this person tried your board... maybe because it couldn't determine if they were an admin or global moderator.. therefore hiding a portion of the posts...

Try a "recount posts" for craps and giggles

mediman.. the error posted above is an error w/ mySQL.

while it could be indirectly *caused* by cookies... its still a mySQL error.

I tried to come up w/ some explination..

it seems to affect this user when it comes to post counts...  by any chance are they a mod or admin?

@roundboy it´s a php error! this error comes not from mysql! php cannot receive results from db coz the cookie is wrong!

ok ok.. I will conceed that this error is returned from php... I am stupid ;)

I just can't see how the cookie is affecting this lookup..  I don't know enough about yabbse internally to comment further....

bottom line is that query isn't working..  but only for that user?  wierd..

Check your bookmark that use to go your board and see if you included the www.  This drove me nuts for MONTHS trying to figure it out.

Hi

I encounter the same problems, but where do I change this?

When I go to my forntpage: www.dykkesiden.com (norwegian page, but click in the menu at "Diskuter dykking"). You van then see at the statusbar that the right url is linked: www.dykkesiden.com/forum

However, when you click on it it ends up without www. Where do I change this? ???

I'm having the same problem using foxserv winxp..
I have the cookie name here if that helps
Cookie:compactman@24.150.57.6
I deleted cookies in both opera and IE and it doesn't make a difference so the problem is not browser based...

I also added these lines to my loginout.php

Code: [Select]
   setCookie($cookieusername);
setCookie($cookieusername,'',time()-3600,"24.150.48.6/php-bin/yabbse/",".24.150.48.6");
setCookie($cookiepassword);
setCookie($cookiepassword,'',time()-3600,"24.150.48.6/php-bin/yabbse/",".24.150.48.6");
setCookie('expiretime','-1',time()-3600,"24.150.48.6/php-bin/yabbse/",".24.150.48.6");

Another possible cause of log in problems, where you log in and then become guest when you change pages, is caused by firewalls. For instance, if you have ZoneAlarm set to block cookies, make sure you add your YABB site to the Privacy Site List and enable persistent cookies.
Title: Re:Why can I not stay logged in?

Yeah Ive done that... I know its the bug in php and apache 2 though because I had 5 other users try and login and they get the very same thing.. I switched to sessions put the / in and still same problems.. turned off firewall, set the cookies changed the code..

Now I just hope this bug I have gets delt with.. I tried using the new version of php was only like 1 point above the one I had and apparently there is a problem between apache 2 and that new php...

UGH lol..

FYI...  The cookie issue has been resolved, well to a certain point.

If you install ttCMS (http://www.ttcms.com (http://www.ttcms.com)) as the front end, it handles cookies in a different manner and all the problems I have been having over the past few months have resolved.  Thanks Andy!

ttCMS will should be available to the public in about a week.  I've been Bata testing it and I can tell, you...  COOKIE problems have been fixed!   ;D ;D

The ttCMS Project is a great thing... It combines the best BB, YaBB SE with an advanced CMS (Content Management System), ttCMS.

You can check out my site if you want, www.lowellmi.net (http://www.lowellmi.net) (sorry about the layout... I'll get to that  :P) or the ttCMS site (Link above).   :D

I think Andy re-wrote the cookies part.  You will have to ask him (AJP).  Whatever he did... all can sign on and remain signed on now.

Anyway, cookies are fixed through this avenue.   8)

Is there any reason why guests have to have cookies set? Maybe the code should be changed so that cookies are only set if the person is logged in? Could it be that the "guest" cookies are somehow overriding the "logged in" cookies?

I found out something when digging around for what this problem is (as I am stuck with it too  :-\ )

island4x4.com   FALSE   /   FALSE   2147299200   YaBBusername    wwwabbit
island4x4.com   FALSE   /   FALSE   2147299200   YaBBpassword   yyLksK4CuQ07M
wwwabbit.com   FALSE   /   FALSE   1066347914   expiretime   1066347914

This is a snapshot of my .lynx_cookie file the island4x4.com cookies are for a Yabb Gold board, and the wwwabbit.com is a cookie for the Yabb SE 1.4.1 board that I am going to throw out the window soon ;)
It seems all it is setting is the expiretime, the yabbuser and password are not getting set :-\ Anyone got a clue why?

Well, I just had to move my forum to a new host. Before the move, there were no complaints from my members about staying logged in, but now that I am on the new server, everyone gets logged out if they leave the forum. All the settings are exactly the same as they were on the old server, and i've tried a bunch of suggestions from this thread, and none have worked.

could this possibly have something to do with the host?

Better move to another host when you cannot fix the login than to downgrade. Your responsibility, you were told to stay on 1.5.3.

Lets end that discussion in this thread here. This is a FAQ thread, open a support request in the other help or in the installer help forum, somebody will help you to find that login mod code.

Edit: This code should fix the login problem for YaBB SE 1.5.3 on PHP 4.0.6:

jo,

Code: [Select]
function LoadCookie()
{
  global $password, $username, $cookiename, $HTTP_COOKIE_VARS;

  if (isset($HTTP_COOKIE_VARS[$cookiename]))
  {
      list($username, $password) = @unserialize(stripslashes($HTTP_COOKIE_VARS[$cookiename]));
      $username = ($username != "") ? $username : 'Guest';
  }
        else
        {
                $password = '';
                $username = 'Guest';
        }
}

gruß pitti

You have to replace the function LoadCookie by the above code.

Edit Settings.php.  Please do not use special characters, like underscores, in cookie names.

Your board is not even sending a cookie. What version of PHP are you running?

Please copy the line that has $cookiename on it from your Settings.php.

Code: [Select]
$Cookie_Length = 60;            # Cookies will expire after XX minutes of person logging in (they will be logged out after)

$cookiename = "syraphinforum";            # Name of the cookie
not sure what version it is...its a friends server...but i think its the latest version.[/color]

Check phpinfo() to find out for sure.
