Title: Avatar gallery back online
Post by: Compuart on April 05, 2003, 07:38:11 PM
The avatar gallery has been reopened. It had been temporarily closed due to the large amount of bandwidth it consumed.

One of the largest YaBB SE communities (40K.CA (http://www.40k.ca)/EldarOnline.com (http://www.eldaronline.com)) has offered to host and moderate the avatar gallery. Because it will be used by both the YaBB SE and the 40k community, the gallery can even grow in a much faster pace. We are very grateful to Purple Raine for hosting the gallery.

The gallery can be accessed by clicking 'Avatar Gallery' in the left bar.

Just out of curiosity...how much diskspace does the entire gallery take up? any rough ideas?
Title: Re:Avatar gallery back online

roughtly 30 MB

What you should do....is put all the avatars on an ISP webspace account. (some offer as much as 50mb), then link to them on there.
hehe
Least then there would be no worries about bandwith.  ;D

Huh? No worries about bandwidth?  :o

What ISP did you have in mind?

Well over here in England, all the major ISP's give you free webspace, no mention of bandwith at all.
For instance my Cable internet provider has 50mb of diskspace allocated per home user.
They don't seem to care what you put on there as long as it isn't illegal material of course :P
But of course, it's an ISP account for residential users, so it doesn't come with php or mysql or anything.
So i'm not sure if it would work.
But would be a good place to store regularly used images or something :)

The Avatar-Gallery causes something like 40-50 GB traffic per month... i bet that every host that promises "unlimited bandwidth for 9.99$/month" will kick you before the first month is over *g* The Webspace isn't a problem....

I understand that.
What I was saying, was isp's over here in England and i'm sure it applies to America to, don't have restrictions on TRAFFIC....
Meaning I could fill my 50mb of webspace up with say.....a 49mb zip file and have 100 people download it and they wouldn't care.
Worth bearing in mind, i'm talking about isp's not webhosts
So if the actuall STORAGE area doesn't need to have php or mysql installed, then you should consider sticking all the jpegs/gifs on a isp account
It's cheesy..but would save you a fair buck i'm sure :P

You could use a mirroring system if the bw becomes too much. Just another idea :)

SF.net could be a mirror.
I am sure you can find some other reliable users with dedicated servers that would do the same.

When the bandwidth will become a problem, I'm sure Purple Raine will inform me, and there will be time enough to move to a mirror. Untill that time, gratitude towards Purple Raine is all we have to pay for the bandwidth ;)

You're very welcome.

For the many, many, many things YaBBSE has done for me, this is the least I can do.

That said, I may be moving servers soon (doesn't mean anything except for a disruption of a couple days) if my contract with my current host expires.

I hope to have a longlasting partnership with YaBBSE and I look forward to doing more great things with y'all (although it feels like "US" would be a better term, as we're all part of the same community =)

Cheers

A lot of ISP's these days have a "remote linking" policy, so usually you can't and aren't allowed to remotely use them...

Title: Re:Avatar gallery back online

It's a Gallery which means the avatars are to be appreciated individually, so there is not .zip for them all.

I could provide about a 10-15 gig mirror...probably not "forever" but at least for probably the next year if not longer...

I'm not familiar with the technical side of mirroring but wouldn't mind helping out...

What you're describing is akin to selling snake oil.

Be more wary of those who claim 'unlimited bandwidth'

here goes my woeful tale :)

I got 'stung' by fasthosts.co.uk once. they are one of the largest hosts in our country.  they offer 'unlimited bandwidth'. i was buying from a reseller back then. they blocked the resellers account (every site he was selling space to) because my forum was 'breaking the acceptable use policy'. we had been monitoring the usage of my site and it was pushing up towards shifting about 10 gig a month.. around then it was shut down.

they cited 'excessive data transfer' as the reason the site was closed and quoted their acceptable use policy, but refused to say how much was acceptable. they then proceeded to demand 500 to cover the costs and barred ftp access to all the sites. even though we said the site wuold move they wouldnt give access to the data so I could move it. luckily i had never been able to properly secure the board on their server (no .htaccess.. what?!) so I had resorted to changing the default install directories some unobvious names. (i was using yabb 1 final at the time)
i managed to get the board file by constructing a macro in ultraedit to parse the board posts and members files that would spit out a file with the download location for all the files. dumped it ina a download manager, and hey presto.. 'stole' my data which was being held at ransom.

i was not best pleased.

i then found a new host ( as jeff can tell u :) ) and changed my template to the following (warning language in this image may cause offence  ;D)

image is here (http://overseer.igangsta.com/fu_fasthosts.jpg)

i then phoned them up to gloat... within 2 days the site was accesible again even though they had maintained it wouldnt be until the money had been coughed up. (the parameters of the acceptable use were acceptable again?)

dont trust anything that says 'unlimited bandwidth'.

Then again, some hosts out there don't know jack about webhosting, and are complete morons, as I've had the unfortunate luck of running into three of 'em  ::)

Complete waste of time, be sure to read the fine print in anything you think is too good to be true!

Would be really nice if the Gallery was back...I'd hate to think I went to all that trouble to upload....what was it now, well over 100 avatars for nothing.

Think that the admin of the Gallery isn't aware of the problem or isn't looking at this forum anymore?

I suppose they are aware of the problem. I suppose the downtime is related to the upgrade of the forum software from yse to smf (beta).

Me too have uploaded lots of avatars there and hope the gallery will be back one day...

Here's a suggestion for you. Because you don't want people linking to the images, and because you're worried about bandwidth, zip up all the images and stick them in your downloads section. That way we get all of them at once and can upload whatever images we want to our avatars folder without wasting your bandwidth.

It's okay, I've already added the necessary code to the .htaccess to prevent it.
