Title: [Done 1.5.1] recentPoll & New recentTopics() for SSI.php
Post by: Spaceman-Spiff on February 13, 2003, 02:48:44 AM
Name: SSI_Enhancements (recentPoll & New recentTopics)
For: YSE 1.5.1Final
Mod Version: 1.5

Info:
This mod is made for showing the latest or a certain poll in your forum. Options for the poll can be found at the beginning of the SSI.php.
This mod is made to enhance the current recentTopics() function in SSI.php. By using this mod, you will be able to edit the recentTopics look according what you like via a template file, like News.php.

The .mod files are made for YaBB SE 1.5.x
For other YSE versions, check the installation instruction in readme.txt. (just copy and paste the whole recentTopics() function.

Read the readme.txt file or go to the demo site for include instructions!
Open the sample template to check the available variables.

Demo:
..:: PHP Version (http://www.monkey-pirate.com/omanga/ssi_test.php) :: SHTML Version (http://www.monkey-pirate.com/omanga/ssi_test.shtml) ::..

..:: Download mod file (http://www.spiff.xtram.com/ysemods/SSI_Enhancements_1.5.zip) ::..
use with BoardMod (http://boardmod.yabbforum.com) for faster edit ;)

Changelogs:
New in v1.5:
   - recentpoll now not showing hidden boards unless the user has the permission
New in v1.4:
   - compliant with 1.5.1 bug/security fix
New in v1.3:
   - included 1.5.1final version
   - fixed poll width not showing properly
New in v1.2:
   - fixed recentTopics function call
   - made recentPoll function
New in v1.1:
   - works for .shtml (read the readme.txt file for instructions)
   - "MOVED:" topics are no longer shown
   - topic duplicates are no longer shown (thx to Joseph Fung for the code)

FAQ:
How to use the new recentTopics?
Same as in the previous versions, only you need to add the template filename that you want to use, example: <?php recentTopics("template1.php"); ?> (.php)
or: <!--#include virtual="SSI.php?function=recentTopics&template=rTopics_template.php" --> (.shtml)

i have downloaded the mod and boardmod, however as this is the first time im using boardmod with yabbse 1-5-1 (the last time being with yabb gold) I don't know where my script file is that it keeps asking for.

In other words, I have no idea how to install this mod :(

Can someone please explain it to me? thanks :)

edit in: I want to keep my site looking how it is http://ymv.vze.com (http://ymv.vze.com)

I want to have the little icons and then just the topic name, that links to the actual topic. I don't want dates or authors or anything like that.

Post by: Spaceman-Spiff on February 13, 2003, 04:11:55 PM
its the same way like when u install Y1G
but point the BoardMod to index.php instead of YaBB.cgi/.pl
after installing the mod, open the SSI.php and change the config part (on top of the codes, after the credits)
u'll need to change the path, and the parts that u want to show/hide in recentTopics2())
for details, read http://www.yabbse.org/community/index.php?board=158;action=display;threadid=11961

I have a feature request :)

I'd love to have the little message icon to still be there. Say they selected the thumbsup message icon, I'd like that to be there instead of the >>

Is this possible?

and thanks :)

open SSI.php

search for the global part (beginning of recentTopics2()
add in the line after:
Code: [Select]
global $imagesdir;
replace
Code: [Select]
$request2 = mysql_query ("SELECT subject FROM {$db_prefix}messages WHERE ID_MSG=$row[ID_FIRST_MSG] LIMIT 1");
with
Code: [Select]
$request2 = mysql_query ("SELECT subject, icon FROM {$db_prefix}messages WHERE ID_MSG=$row[ID_FIRST_MSG] LIMIT 1");
replace close to the bottom of recentTopic2():
Code: [Select]
$thepost .=" <a ...with
Code: [Select]
$thepost .="<img src=\"$imagesdir/$row[icon]\"> <a ...

maybe i should make something like news_template.php for recentTopics ;)

Sorry about the amount of questions I asked, it's just that I have no clue about coding and rely on copy n paste jobs.

Anyways, thanks for your time.

after using this mod for a day, i thought that i still like the RecentTopics in YSE v1.4.1

why?
because in the new (1.5.1) SSI.php recentTopics, u can get something like:
Quote
Recent Forum Topics:
WooHoo by zip
Re: Finally....it's here -_-||| by c
Re: Finally....it's here -_-||| by f
Re: Finally....it's here -_-||| by a
Re: Finally....it's here -_-||| by b
Re: Finally....it's here -_-||| by d
Re: Finally....it's here -_-||| by c
Finally....it's here -_-||| by e
the same topic can be repeated a few times, which i dont like :|
the current queries in 1.5.1 are quite complex, and i havent been able to make it like 1.4.1 without making big adjustments or nested queries
so i'm back using 1.4.1 version for now...
unless if someone can tell me how to edit the current 1.5.1 ;)

I feel pretty stupid because I am lost you keep saying you do it like the old one but I never had the old one.

I am wanting to display the most recent topics or post on my main site's page which is not inside my yabbse directory. I have no idea what tag goes on that page or where to place the modified files etc to call for this function. Can you explain to me like I am stupid the steps needed to include the recent post on my main site page because I never had a previous version.

I am using ver 1.5.1RC and php4.30 and the latest mysql  on a windows advanced server.

Thanks

SSI.php is already a built in feature in YSE, this mod just enhances the look
for an SSI.php demo/tutorial, follow this link: http://www.yabbse.org/community/ssi_examples.php
or load the ssi_exaples.php file that you have in your forum directory

if u're in 1.5.0, u only need to replace the whole recentTopic() function with the one in .mod file
and if u're using shtml, add the 1st change too in the .mod file

I have now looked in the admin section and this is what I get:
YaBB SE 1.5.1RC1
This runs down nearly all my files except one.
Am i running the best version here and if so, why won't this mod install?

Spaceman?
do I need to run this mod before i convert my index.html to index.Shtml?

i'm not sure what you mean by that
by default, YSE already has an SSI.php recentTopics()
this mod only enhance the look of it

what message did u get when trying to apply the mod on boardmod?

Hi there,

I've just downloaded and installed this Mod...everything seems to be working apart from one thing - I'm getting the same thread being displayed throughout my list on the webpage.

The webpage is here - http://www.stirlingbikeclub.org.uk (http://www.stirlingbikeclub.org.uk) - I'd like to display the last 8 - 10 threads that have had activity - how can I do this?

When I do a version check of my YaBB SE, this is what it gives me - YaBB SE 1.5.1RC1.

If I can't get this done with this version, how can I 'rollback' to a previous version to allow me to do this? Although reading this thread it would appear this latest version of the SSI.php is meant to only show 1 instance of each thread... (I'm confused!  ??? ).

Right, I hereby claim that I am unable to follow thread links - I did indeed find the fix for this in the User Guide link from your omanga pages.

Sorry for the hassles!  ;D

Thanks very much for your help,

Richard.

yes.. tried recentpoll..

i am unable to vote:

Quote
Either that poll doesn't exist, the poll has been locked, or you tried to vote twice.

looking at url.. it is only putting:

Code: [Select]
?action=vote
at the end of the url...  it needs the board arguments, etc.

Post by: Spaceman-Spiff on April 13, 2003, 04:19:17 PM
it works, the vote is transfered using post method, so it wont show in the url
the only bug i made is a typo for function call
i wrote sessionCheck() instead of checkSession() >_<
i'll release a fixed version soon

Hey spaceman-Spiff this is a cool  8) mod. i like it already although i have some trouble with it .. ;)
perhaps you can help me out.

I applied the mod 1.3 but i cant get it to work in files made by my self

I only get everything to work when i place the code in the ssi_examples.shtml.

but as soon as i rename that file (nothing changes exept the file name) it gives me this

error Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /forum/ssi_examples2.shtml on this server.

is there a file where i should include newly made shtml files? or what  am i overlooking?

and another thing is ..is it possible to target the frame or let it open in a new window?

to see what i mean  i have made a link to my test site.
http://www.hostelsamsterdam.com/flyingpig/alt1024/1024all.htm (http://www.hostelsamsterdam.com/flyingpig/alt1024/1024all.htm) where the ssi_examples works and the other not

I would realy apreciate it if you could help me out... and when ever you r in amsterdam you can stay the night for free in the hostel ;D

i am baffled ???

thanks in advance

maime

Hi spaceman,

 I use  a small frame on de side of my site of about 200 pixels width to put the the recent topics and thepoll in.

clicking on a link makes that the topic (or in fact the whole board) is opened in that frame.

so my question is; is it possible to change something in the ssi.php so that the showed links opens full screen in a new browswer or that you can taget them to a named frame?

if you look on http://www.hostelsamsterdam.com/flyingpig/alt1024/1024all.htm (http://www.hostelsamsterdam.com/flyingpig/alt1024/1024all.htm) you see my test setting... and the problem i am facing  :'(

I opened ssi.php to try somethings but i keep messing it up instead of getting results

thanks
ps i hope this carifies my prewvious  mumbling about the target thing   ;D

i see what you mean now...
u can leave the target url to that frame only, so it will work okay with the recent poll
for the recentTopics, u can edit so all the urls will point to  _top, example:
Code: [Select]
$recent_topic = '<a href="' . $scripturl . '?board=' ...replace with:
Code: [Select]
$recent_topic = '<a target="_top" href="' . $scripturl . '?board=' ...

hi,
i got one more question

if i want to use a another picture instead of $recent_icon in
 echo "<tr><td> $recent_icon [$recent_topic] by $recent_poster</td></tr>\n";
how do i do that?

i made an image called ltopic.gif and i thought this was the methode
echo "<tr><td> $image[ltopic][$recent_topic] by $recent_poster</td></tr>\n";

because it worked with existing images like $img [home]
but i got errors when i tried to use my own pic :(
can you tell me what i am doing wrong?

thanks

thanks spaceman :) did not know it was that easy.

I actualy managed it in an other way..  i couldnot stand it that i never found out something myself and i have to say its my first real found out myself php coding ;D
finally  ;)i did

echo "<tr><td>$img[ltopic][$recent_topic]</td></tr>\n";

and put a reference in the english.Lng file

$img['ltopic'] = '<img src="' . $imagesdir . '/ltopic.gif" alt="' . $txt[333] . '" title="' . $txt[333] . '" border="0" />';

yep,yep  :) my first php coding i am quiet pleased with myself and gonna eat a lot of chocolat now

your  <img src="http://www.yoursite.com/images/image1.jpg" border="0" /> is much more efficient though ;) i know
Title: Re:[Done 1.5.x] recentPoll & New recentTopics() for SSI.php
Post by: Spaceman-Spiff on April 14, 2003, 07:45:43 PM
echo "<tr><td>$img[ltopic][$recent_topic]...
actually that's not the proper way, u can just do it like:
Code: [Select]
echo "<tr><td>$img[ltopic]...because ltopic is an array index in $img variable
if you do like $img[][] it will be a 2d array, array inside an array (might be a bit confusing concept for a beginner :P)

Hi,

ive just installed your mod and it works great, no problems at all. i was just wondering if i could request a feature?

my page currently shows the last 5 topics on the main page, would it be possible to make some sort of archive that shows all the topics? or say 50 topics? the problem is, that the amount of topics displayed is defined in ssi.php . Is there some way around this?

any help would be great

open the new SSI.php, search for
Code: [Select]
function recentTopics ($template = "rTopics_template.php")
{
   global $settings, $scripturl, $txt, $censored, $db_prefix, $num_recentTopics, $username;
replace with
Code: [Select]
function recentTopics ($template = "rTopics_template.php", $num_recentTopics = 5)
{
   global $settings, $scripturl, $txt, $censored, $db_prefix, $username;

then when calling the function, use:
recentTopics("templatename.php", numOfTopics)

Would it be possible to have it to take the latest poll from a certain board. So you can for example have a (might even be hidden) poll board, and just view te poll on your website ?

Hiya Spiff,
Just wanted to say great mod, and is exactly what I was looking for (the poll portion). I do have one small question. When my poll displays, seperating View results and view comments is a | character, and this in turn creates a white space between the two options. I went into english.lng and found this line:
Code: [Select]
$polltxt[4] = "View comments";
$polltxt[5] = "View results";

if ($MenuType == 1)
{
   $menusep = ' | ';
Which I assumed was that seperator command. However, I tried leaving white space, or just replacing it with another symbol, yet it didn't change on the page. Am I looking at the wrong thing, is there a way around this, or is it stuck like that?

Thanks in advance,

Meth

edit SSI.php:
Code: [Select]
<a href="' . $url . 'action=viewResult">' . $polltxt[5] . '</a> | ' . $viewComments . 'and
Code: [Select]
<td class="' . $bodystyle . '">' . $txt['yse24'] . ': ' . $totalvotes . ' | ' . $viewComments . '</td>

first question: what version is your YSE?
2nd question: have u installed any other mods?

if you have not installed any mods, download yabbse upgrade version or safe mode version and unzip it to a folder, then use BoardMod and point index.php inside that folder

a good upgrade for this mod would be an archive page of polls, and it would use includes or ssi. and under the polls it will have an archive link possibly, and it would use permissions of corse.

i seriously can't remember how to truncate long message names. you can see my site over at www.yourmusicview.com

I want to trim messages down that are too long so I don't expand on my perfectly sized tables. How do I do this again? I'm using the latest version of this mod and latest yabbse.

follow the white rabbit link in my sig
there's a link for some code to shorten news subject
it's basically the same idea, you just need to change the variable name for SSI recentTopics

hmm... lots of code in 1.5.5's SSI.php is changed...
it even has a new function (recentPosts)

recentPoll will be available in SMF as a built-in feature
the template for recentTopics isnt done yet though...

i'll update this mod if there are more requests, otherwise, pls wait for SMF...

I have installed the update to 1.5.5 and my mod had changed - not significantly but enough to not behave the same as previously...I had to removed 5 lines and add a 'target="_blank"' to a line to get it working again.

I'm trying to develop a new template for my site and when I try to include the SSI.php file on the page, it fails to load anything...I get errors about unable to start a session or something...

Any ideas? I can provide examples if required but the example code doesn't work for me...also I have 2 other includes on the page - 1 for my menu and the other for a Latest News table - they both give me errors and do not display - but if I remove the example code to include the SSI.php (which has been changed to my site path) everything works...

yes pleaze  :), I got your mod working on 1.5.4 and i would love to get it working on 1.5.5 . We dont know how long it takes when that feature is available in smf.
I especially like the choice you can make which poll to show. so if it is not to much of a bother ;D   its defenitly my favorite mod  8)
